The Jesuit Jorge Bergoglio, born on 17 December 1936, comes from Argentina, where he worked as a priest and Archbishop of Buenos Aires before being elected Pope as a cardinal in the 2013 conclave - the first non-European bishop of Rome and thus head of the Catholic Church worldwide. The pontiff is popular in the media, not least because of his spontaneous statements in his numerous interviews. He is popular with the Catholic population because of his simple demeanour and informal style.
